Vasectomy

A vasectomy works by preventing a man from ejaculating sperm when he orgasms, thereby avoiding unwanted pregnancy . A qualified doctor will perform the procedure, which takes just a few minutes. It involves clamping or making a tiny cut in the vas deferens – the tube via which sperm travels. This stops the sperm from mixing with semen before being ejaculated, and thus prevents unwanted pregnancies, as an egg can only be fertilised if sperm is present in the semen. The sperm is simply reabsorbed into the body.

The procedure takes about half an hour, and because it is done under local anaesthetic, it is painless. It is recommended that you rest for a few hours afterwards, and apply an icepack to the affected area to help ease swelling.
